Term 4 Week 2

This week everything was flat. In fact it was all papery…. We spoke to the children about how to make flat things 3D - folds, bends, tabs, weaving - and offered them a few minutes to look and feel the different strengths, thicknesses and transparencies of the papers and cards before they began. Quite a few were stickers and there were some with lines and grids on. The first thing I noticed was that a couple of the children who can be often quite unfocussed were instantly engaged - these were materials that they were familiar with and they had no problem in using them. The second thing was that the children who usually focus hard on building and making were disappointed by the (perceived) lack of ‘building’ materials. They soon saw the possibilities!

Experimenting with transparent or translucent papers was a really interesting experience for some. How would the different pens work? Would the pens come through? Would stickers stick and be removable? Was it strong enough to build with?
